Introducing the Hunger Hike Keynote – Race Johnson


Purdue Football Alumnus to Give Keynote

Race Johnson, Purdue alumnus & former Boilermaker football player, will offer remarks to kick off this year’s Hunger Hike THIS Sunday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Riehle Plaza (N 2nd Street, Lafayette). Throughout his life, Race has worked hard and has had a special commitment to serving his community as an individual, as an athlete and with his family and church — and he’s eager to share his story THIS Sunday.

Son of Bill & Jill Johnson, Race was born in Indianapolis and grew up in Carmel. Race has a younger brother, Steele, and younger sister, Hollyn. Steele is a diver at Purdue who has won four NCAA championships and a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics.

A high school athlete, Race joined the Purdue football team as a walkon in 2013. He was an Academic All-Big Ten player who played in three games in 2015, and eight games in 2016. Race earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Purdue University (West Lafayette) in May 2017. He is currently a member of the Lugar Real Estate Team in Indianapolis.

Introducing the Hunger Hike 2018 Co-Chairs

The Hunger Hike 2018 co-chairs are Purdue Coaches Sharon Versyp (women’s basketball) & Dave Kucik (men’s & women’s crew & rowing).

Coaches Versyp & Kucik are perfect ambassadors for Hunger Hike. Both have a high standard for their own work, hold their teams to a high standard and have a serious commitment to serving their community — especially in supporting food assistance and nutrition programs. As wonderful role models they will also be engaging the collegiate athletes on their teams in this Hunger Hike event.

Hunger Hike features RatPak’s “DJ Powder”


DJ Powder from Rat Pak Mobile DJs will emcee and provide dance music at Hunger Hike 2018.

DJ Powder creates a fun, family friendly environment during registration and leading up to the kick-off of Hunger Hike from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 16 at Riehle Plaza.

“Studio b” Brings Zumba to Hunger Hike



Miss Brooke (studio owner) & Kasie (fitness instructor) from Studio b Dance & Fitness (downtown Lafayette) will once again bring the Hunger Hike crowd to its feet with the annual Zumba warm-up. Studio b Dance & Fitness which opened in 2014 has dance & fitness classes as well as a competitive dance team — and was recently recognized as the Small Business of the Year.

One of the highlights of Hunger Hike each year is Zumba presented by Studio b. The Zumba warm-up will follow the National Anthem on Sunday, September 16 at 1:20 p.m. at Riehle Plaza. Please join us to participate in our Zumba warm up with Miss Brooke & Kasie — and to support Hunger Hike — Fighting Hunger with our whole Hearts & Soles. YouTube Sensation to Sing the National Anthem


Harrison High School Senior & YouTube Sensation, Jay Alan, to Sing the National Anthem at Hunger Hike 2018

Jay Alan will kick-off Hunger Hike THIS Sunday, September 16, at 1:15 p.m. at Riehle Plaza with the singing of the US National Anthem.

Jay Alan, 17-year-old Harrison High School senior, lives in Lafayette with his parents. He has loved singing and performing for as long as he can remember.

Today he posts his intimate live performances on his YouTube channel regularly. Jay Alan has close to 60,000 YouTube subscribers, and many of his music videos have over 100,000 views —one with over 340,000 views (so far). After graduation in June, he plans to attend Berklee College of Music (Boston) and will pursue a career in music. Check out Jay Alan on YouTube (youtube.com/jayalan) and Instagram (@thejayalan).

Hunger Hike 2018 Teams Up with Purdue Coaches


Purdue Coaches Versyp & Kucik – Fighting Hunger

At an event this week at Mackey Arena, two prominent Purdue Coaches announced they would be teaming up with Hunger Hike as honorary co-chairs to join the Fight Against Hunger.

Honorary Hunger Hike Co-chairsCoach Sharon Versyp (women’s basketball) & Coach Dave Kucik (rowing & crew). Both spoke passionately about the importance of Hunger Hike and the power of coming together as a community to Fight Hunger. They also put out a challenge to the entire community to start fundraising now to reach this year’s Hunger Hike goal of $115,000.

Representatives from the three sponsoring organizations — Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank, Inc. & St. Thomas Aquinas Center — also offered remarks and shared how important this fundraiser is to funding the programs necessary to addressing the needs of the families in our community and abroad.
